Haddenham Conservation Society
The NLOW project has benefited Haddenham in several ways. First, it has raised the profile of diversity and environmental issues for the Parish Council, which has become increasingly receptive to schemes which enhance the local environment. This is reflected in the PC’s welcoming representatives from Haddenham Conservation Society on their Environmental Overview Group. This has enabled us to influence the PC’s grass-cutting contract to help safeguard and encourage wildflowers across the Parish. (Feast Green photo)
Working with NLOW has also introduced us to new volunteers and organisations, such as Caring for God’s Acre. This in turn, has led to improvements in the management of the Closed Cemetery in Haddenham, culminating in receiving the bronze award from the Cambridgeshire Churchyard Conservation Award Scheme.
The Closed Cemetery has also benefited from NLOW’s funding of a new interpretation board (photo). In addition, NLOW has supplied wildflower seeds and plugs, and saplings for hedge improvements (photo). These have been planted to enhance a hedge, which it is hoped will attract turtle doves, in conjunction with the RSPB’s turtle dove project.
All in all, NLOW, with its knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff, notably Karen, Tate and Jamie, and others before them, has provided hands-on help with projects and raised the local profile of conservation issues.
